Gentle and Humble

A month or two ago, I read a very familiar Biblical passage Matthew 11:28-30 NIV. “Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”

Probably like you, I have read this passage many times. But this time as I read it, I saw something I had never seen before. It smacked me. So, I went and did some research to see if my enlightened moment was accurate. And I found that it was. What I saw is that this is the only place in scripture where Jesus, in His own words, describes His own inner person.  Now Jesus gave a lot of descriptions about Himself, His role, and His purpose.  He is the way, the truth, and the life. He is the Great Shepherd. The resurrection. The Light of the world.

But this is the only place in scripture, at least that I can find, where Jesus, in His own words gives us a glimpse of own His inner self – of who He is.  When He gives us this quick glance  – He uses 2 words.  He doesn’t say – I am strong and mighty.  Or I am wise and holy.  Or, I am peaceful and courageous. Look at the 2 words He uses to describe Himself. He says - I am gentle and humble

I have been asking myself the question – Who is God?  Would the first words you picked to describe God be the words – gentle and humble? That’s who God says He is.
